Heinrich Schutz, Du Schalksknecht, for tenor voice and viols
May 28, 2009
A contemporary of J S Bach, Heinrich Schutz (1685-1672) wrote Useless Servant for voice, five trombones and two bass trombones, but there is an opportunity soon to have a run- through with tenor voice and viols, perhaps with a bassoon or curtal in the sixth part and a French bass viol on the seventh. I’m looking forward to the liquid chocolate sound. So long as the tempo is sufficient to give the short phrases interest (the deep sound can cause players to drag) and the crucial sharps and naturals at harmonic changes are clear, everything should go swimmingly.
